What is it?
Yersinia enterocolitica bacteria can live in pigs, rodents, sheep, and other animals. A person may get infected with Y. enterocolitica after eating raw or undercooked pork contaminated with the bacteria. Rarely, the infection can also be spread from person to person through skin to skin contact after handling contaminated meat [1]. The infection is more common in young children usually clears up on its own. Complications are rare but they may include skin rash, joint pain, and blood infection [2], [3], [4], [5].
