Akkermansia is a group of bacteria that has beneficial roles in glucose metabolism, cholesterol control, and intestinal immunity. They also help to maintain the mucus layer that lines the gut potentially giving some protection against gastro-intestinal inflammation and infections [1] [2] [3] [4].
Ideally, we like to see typical to high levels of Akkermansia in adults but it should be notes that very high levels have been associated with excess mucus production and greater risks of colon cancer and autoimmune diseases [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]. This is a rare finding though and the relationship between Akkermansia and these diseases is not necessarily causal.
Specific foods (ex: antioxidant-rich foods and complex carbohydrates) and certain supplements can keep Akkermansia levels balanced in adults [10]. Having a house pet can also keep Akkermansia at a healthy level [11]. (Adapted from Tiny Health)
