What is it?

Escherichia dysenteriae, sometimes known as Shigella dysenteriae, is rarely seen in western nations but is a cause of severe travelers diarrhea [1]. It is particularly associated with travel in areas of poor sanitation. Some strains of E. dysenteriae can produce the Shiga toxin which can lead to particularly severe gastrointestinal infections. It is unlikely that we will find this in high levels unless you have recently traveled to a high risk area but it is possible to pass on the bacteria to others without showing symptoms, so it is worth checking.

We consider low to undetectable levels of Escherichia dysenteriae to be optimal. The best way to combat Escherichia dysenteriae is to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that will outcompete them for resources. (Adapted from Tiny Health)
