Escherichia flexneri, sometimes known as Shigella flexneri, can be present at low levels in the gut without causing issues but high levels can cause a particularly severe gastrointestinal illness, especially in children [1]. It is a relatively rare cause of diarrheal illnesses with only 10,000 to 15,000 cases of E. flexneri infections are reported each year in the United States for example, but it can be more common in young children and is worth keeping an eye on [2] [3].
We consider low to undetectable levels of Escherichia flexneri to be optimal. The best way to combat Escherichia flexneri is to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that will outcompete them for resources. If you have small children, it is also particularly important to maintain good hygiene when changing diapers. (Adapted from Tiny Health)
