White blood cell (WBC) count measures the total number of white blood cells in your blood.
White blood cells are part of your immune system and help your body respond to infections, inflammation, and other immune challenges.
WBC provides insight into immune system activity.
Changes in WBC levels can help signal infection, inflammation, stress responses, medication effects, or bone marrow conditions. Because different types of white blood cells serve different roles, the WBC result is interpreted together with the differential, which shows which specific cell types are increased or decreased.
- Below range: Lower WBC levels may reflect reduced immune cell production, certain medications, viral infections, or bone marrow suppression. Interpretation depends on which specific white cell type is low.
- In range: Total white blood cell count is within expected limits.
- Above range: Higher WBC levels often occur in response to infection, inflammation, physiologic stress, or medication effects. Persistently elevated levels may require further evaluation to determine the underlying cause.
