Eosinophil percentage shows what portion of your white blood cells are eosinophils. These cells are part of your immune system's response to two specific types of threats: parasitic infections and allergic reactions. They are rarely active in healthy people with no allergies or infections, which is why their normal percentage is low.
Before modern analysers, a raised eosinophil percentage on a hand-counted smear was one of the clearest clues that something allergic or parasitic was going on. The most common reasons for a high percentage are allergic conditions like asthma, hay fever, or eczema, reactions to medication, or a parasitic infection. A persistently high percentage is worth investigating, especially if it keeps rising. In rare cases, a very high eosinophil level that stays elevated can start to damage organs like the heart and lungs. Eosinophil levels are naturally lower in the morning and higher later in the day. Taking steroid medications also pushes this percentage down. A single reading outside the normal range is rarely cause for alarm on its own. A low percentage is almost never a concern.
