What is it?

Hematocrit measures the percentage of your blood that is made up of red blood cells.

For example, a hematocrit of 0.40 (or 40%) means that 40% of your blood volume consists of red blood cells. Because red blood cells carry oxygen, hematocrit reflects how concentrated your red cells are in your bloodstream.

Why it matters

Hematocrit helps to determine whether the concentration of red blood cells in your blood is appropriate.

This marker is used together with hemoglobin and other red blood cell markers to evaluate oxygen-carrying capacity and to investigate possible anemia or elevated red cell levels.

Because hematocrit reflects both red blood cell mass and plasma volume, it also provides insight into hydration status and overall blood concentration.

Reference ranges

- Below range: May suggest anemia or dilution of the blood (for example from increased fluid volume). Further evaluation helps determine the cause.

- In range: Red blood cell concentration is within expected limits for your sex.

- Above range: May reflect dehydration, reduced plasma volume, or increased red blood cell production. Persistently high levels may require further assessment.
