What is it?

Salmonella enterica is commonly found in the adult gut microbiome. Despite its well-known associations with food poisoning it rarely causes issues while at low levels. Infections tend to occur after handling raw poultry or other contaminated foods and in this case, the S. enterica strains are different from those which normally live in the gut [1] [2]. Nonetheless, it can be harmful at high levels so we consider it worth monitoring.

We consider low to undetectable levels of Salmonella enterica to be optimal. The best way to combat Salmonella enterica is to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that will outcompete them for resources. (Adapted from Tiny Health)
