Maximum heart rate (MHR) is the highest number of beats per minute (bpm) your heart can reach during maximal exercise. It's a useful measure for determining your individual cardiovascular capacity and for designing training programs, particularly those that involve cardiovascular training.
The simplest way to estimate your maximum heart rate is by using the age-based formula: subtract your age from 220. For example, if you are 30 years old, an estimate of your maximum heart rate would be 220 - 30 = 190 bpm.
However, this method is a generalization and individual maximum heart rates can vary quite a bit. At NiaHealth, we either use the above estimate if not direct measurement is taken. If you are doing a VO2 max test with Nia, your maximum heart rate will be measured in your test and used to prescribe your exercise zones.
