HOMA-IR stands for Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance. It's a simple way to estimate how well your body responds to insulin. It uses your fasting blood sugar and insulin levels to calculate a score.
If your score is high, it means your body needs more insulin to keep your blood sugar normal — a sign of insulin resistance. This is an early warning for problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome.
HOMA-IR helps catch signs of insulin resistance early, before blood sugar levels rise or other health problems show up. A high HOMA-IR is linked to a greater risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Fatty liver disease (MASLD)
- Heart problems
A HOMA-IR of 1.0 is considered normal and healthy — this would match a fasting insulin of 5 µU/mL and a fasting glucose of 4.5 mmol/L.
Most healthy people have a HOMA-IR between 0.4 and 2.4.
A score of 2.5 or higher may suggest insulin resistance, but this depends on your background and health.
