What is it?

Hemoglobin A1c, or A1c provides a snapshot of average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months, which is different from the point-in-time measures such as fasting or random glucose. It is a key indicator of diabetes management and risk. Factors that can influence A1c levels include blood sugar control, diet, exercise, and medication adherence.

Why it matters

Reference ranges

There is evidence that the higher the HbA1c; even in the prediabetes range, the higher the risk of developing prediabetes on a continuum of risk from 5.5% onward - this is acknowledged by the Canadian guidelines. Moreover, evidence exists to suggest that above a HbA1c of 5.0%, the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality increases.

Accordingly, NiaHealth adopted intervals of 4.3-5.5% being optimal and 5.5-5.69% being normal.
