What is it?

Hexa-acylated lipopolysaccharide (Hexa-LPS) is a toxin made by some types of gut bacteria, such as E. coli. When hexa-LPS in the gut makes its way into the bloodstream, it can activate the immune system and trigger inflammation.

Why it matters

High levels of hexa-LPS in the blood may contribute to weight gain, as well as the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease. Inflammation caused by hexa-LPS may also increase the risk of cognitive decline. Elevated levels of Hexa-LPS in the stool have also been linked to gut problems, like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
