What is it?

Fibrinogen is a protein made by the liver that helps your blood clot when you are injured. It is also an acute-phase protein, meaning its levels increase when the body is experiencing inflammation. Because fibrinogen participates in both clotting and inflammatory processes, it can rise when the immune system is activated.

Why it matters

Higher fibrinogen levels are associated with systemic inflammation and increased cardiovascular risk. Elevated levels have been linked to conditions such as heart disease, stroke, metabolic dysfunction, and chronic inflammatory states. Fibrinogen is therefore a useful complementary marker when evaluating overall inflammatory burden alongside other markers such as hsCRP.

Reference ranges

Higher fibrinogen levels may reflect chronic inflammation, cardiovascular risk, infection, smoking, obesity, or metabolic dysfunction. Very high levels can occur during acute inflammatory states.
