What is it?

Neutrophil percentage tells you what share of your total white blood cells are neutrophils, the immune cells your body sends first when bacteria or fungi enter. Rather than counting them directly, this value shows their proportion relative to all other white blood cells in your sample.

Why it matters

Before modern analysers, white blood cells were counted by hand under a microscope, tallying 100 cells and recording each type as a percentage. That method made neutrophil percentage one of medicine's oldest infection markers. A rising percentage is one of the earliest signs your immune system is responding to bacterial infection or inflammation. Today's analysers count tens of thousands of cells automatically and can report exact numbers, but the percentage remains on many lab reports because it still offers a fast, reliable snapshot of immune activity. A persistently high or low percentage outside of illness is important to look at more closely, though the percentage alone never tells the whole story.
