What is it?

MCHC stands for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration.

It reflects how densely packed hemoglobin is inside your red blood cells. Unlike MCH, which measures how much hemoglobin is in each cell, MCHC measures how concentrated that hemoglobin is.

It is calculated using your hemoglobin and hematocrit values as part of a complete blood count (CBC).

Why it matters

MCHC helps describe how well your red blood cells are filled with hemoglobin. It adds context when evaluating anemia and helps clinicians understand whether red blood cells appear relatively pale or more densely packed with hemoglobin.

MCHC does not diagnose a condition on its own, but helps guide next steps when interpreted with the rest of the CBC.

Reference ranges

- Below range: Red blood cells are less concentrated with hemoglobin than expected. This is most commonly seen when iron levels are low.

- In range: Hemoglobin concentration within red blood cells is within expected limits.

- Above range: Red blood cells are more densely packed with hemoglobin than expected. This is uncommon and may reflect a specific red blood cell condition or, more commonly, a laboratory or sample related issue. Further interpretation depends on the full CBC and clinical context.
