Clostridium Perfringens and Gut Microbiome Balance

Clostridiodes perfringens are potentially disruptive bacteria that often live in the adult gut [1], [2]. Low levels don't usually cause issues but, in a similar way to C. difficile, then can grow to high levels after a course of antibiotics and lead to diarrhea [3]. C. perfringens may contaminate raw meat and poultry and it's one of the most common causes of foodborne illness in the United States [4], [5]. Common symptoms of infection are watery diarrhea and stomach cramps, which usually resolve on their own after 24 hours [5]. (Adapted from Tiny Health)
