What is it?

Bone mineral density (BMD) quantifies the amount of mineral content, primarily calcium and phosphorus, in a specific area of bone tissue. BMD is commonly used to assess bone health and diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, and other bone-related disorders. The T-score compares an individual's bone mineral density (BMD) to that of a healthy young adult of the same sex.

Body composition DEXA scans provide an estimate of BMD and are not diagnostic for osteoporosis or osteopenia. A true diagnostic DEXA scan focuses on specific parts of the body (the hips and the lower part of the spine) and must always be interpreted by a radiologist. Reference ranges

- At Risk: NiaHealth defines an at risk T Score when values are <-0.5. This indicates that your bone mineral density is significantly lower than that of a healthy young person of the same sex.

- Normal: NiaHealth defines a normal T Score when values are between -0.01 and -0.5. This indicates that your bone mineral density is slightly lower than that of a healthy young person of the same sex.

- Optimal: NiaHealth defines an optimal T Score when values are >0. This indicates that your bone mineral density is equal to or greater than that of a healthy young person of the same sex.
